Science Meets Symphony: ETH Zurich Professor Emeritus László Rybach Conducts in Szeged.
Distinguished geophysics professor László Rybach, namesake of the Rybach Research Center, made a guest appearance to conduct the Universitas Symphony Orchestra.
Rybach, who helmed the Zurich Orchesterverein for an impressive 52 years, has traveled the globe and conducted in numerous major cities. Alongside his musical achievements, he has made a lasting impact in the fields of geophysics and geothermal energy, notably serving two terms as the president of the International Geothermal Association (IGA).
Conducting the Universitas Symphony Orchestra seemed just as second nature to Professor Rybach as delivering a scientific lecture. From his very first gesture to the final downbeat, it was abundantly clear that whether the subject is geothermal science or Mendelssohn, he approaches both with the same effortless grace and humility.
The collaborative, joyful performance by students and faculty was a unique spectacle in its own right, but Professor Rybach’s leadership elevated the concert to even greater heights. He seamlessly connected with musicians more than seventy years his junior, as well as the rest of the ensemble, making for a truly magnificent evening.
