Our institute at the CBGA Conference in Cluj-Napoca!

The XXIII International Congress of the Carpathian-Balkan Geological Association (CBGA) was held on September 9–11, 2026 in Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár), at Babeș-Bolyai University (https://cbga2026.conference.ubbcluj.ro/). The conference is one of the major international forums for earth science research in Central and Southeastern Europe, bringing together researchers from across the field of geosciences.

Our institute was represented by Márta Berkesi, Thomas Lange, Csaba Szabó, Ákos Kővágó, Károly Németh, and Mátyás Hencz — members of the HUN-REN Research Centre for Astronomy and Earth Sciences’ Lendület FluidsByDepth research group. The research presented spanned topics ranging from nanofluid flow to volcanology, and from geoheritage to deep lithospheric processes.

Károly Németh presented the role of volcanic geoheritage in building societies more resilient to volcanic hazards, using examples from Saudi Arabia. Mátyás Hencz introduced a new concept, the idea of Deep-Earth Geoheritage — evaluating xenoliths and fluid inclusions as deep-lithosphere archives and geoheritage elements — based on a first-authored manuscript currently under review. Ákos Kővágó examined the magmatic water content of the Gutin/Gutâi volcanic area in the Eastern Carpathians through FTIR spectroscopic analysis of nominally anhydrous minerals, presenting his publications accepted in 2026. Thomas Lange presented his own work, also accepted for publication this year in the prestigious journal Scientific Reports, on nanoscale processes and modeling approaches for rock-fluid interactions in mantle xenoliths and the associated changes in fluid composition.

The conference also provided an excellent opportunity for professional exchange with regional earth science researchers and for building new collaborations.
