International Leadership and Career Development Forum Held in Sopron
On 6 October 2026, the HUN-REN Institute of Earth Physics and Space Science (EPSS) hosted the EUROBIG Leadership and Career Development Forum ((https://workshop.ggki.hu/eurobig-training-school/) in Sopron, Hungary. The event focused on scientific leadership, the development of impactful research programmes, and the challenges and opportunities of research careers.
Leading international researchers shared their experiences of turning scientific ideas into influential research programmes, developing a long-term scientific vision, and navigating the process of publishing high-impact research. Presentations by Sierd Cloetingh, Taras Gerya, Bilal Haq and Steve Mojzsis explored scientific curiosity, the evolution of research questions, strategic thinking, and the importance of international collaboration. Hans Thybo addressed the practical aspects of publishing in high-impact scientific journals.
Different stages of the research career were also in focus. Representing the HUN-REN EPSS, Kristóf Porkoláb discussed the opportunities and challenges facing early-career researchers, highlighting flexibility, continuous learning, and the development of research independence. Márta Berkesi examined the transition to mid-career, including the challenges of establishing scientific independence, mentoring colleagues, and leading research teams.
The presentations were followed by round-table discussions. Participants exchanged views on scientific leadership and high-impact publishing, research funding and proposal writing, and the needs, opportunities, responsibilities, and community engagement of early-career researchers.
The forum provided a valuable opportunity for international knowledge exchange and strengthening the research community. It also highlighted that successful scientific careers depend not only on research expertise, but also on collaboration, mentorship, strategic thinking, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
The event was supported by the EUROBIG COST Action.
