Participation in the 2026 ICAE International Conference

Researchers from our Institute represented our atmospheric electricity research at the field’s leading international conference, organized by the International Commission on Atmospheric Electricity (ICAE), held in Barcelona, Spain (July 13–17, 2026).

Dr. Gabriella Sátori, Dr. József Bór, and Dr. Tamás Bozóki, together with PhD student Kolos Németh and physics university student András Reichardt, reported on Hungary-based infrastructure developments linked to our institute, as well as final and preliminary results achieved through international collaborations.

They presented nearly 1.5 years of parameter time series derived from Schumann resonance measurements installed at the Jeli Arboretum in 2024. Furthermore, they highlighted the advantages of utilizing extremely low-frequency (ELF) radio wave observations in atmospheric electricity-related climate research and the global characterization of lightning activity. The researchers also summarized the experiences gathered so far from the UHU space experiment. They demonstrated how variations in Schumann resonance parameters reflect the solar cycle dependence of global lightning distribution, as well as the extraordinary electrical activity of the 2022 Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai volcanic eruption, and how the mapping efficiency of the optical Lightning Imager aboard the Meteosat Third Generation satellite (MTG LI) regarding lightning activity over the main Central African thunderstorm region, compared to ground-based observation networks.
