Career:
Dr. Gyula Mentes began his research career in 1971 as a technical staff member at the MTA Geodetic Research Laboratory (from 1972, the MTA Geodetic and Geophysical Research Institute). From 1978 to 1986 he served as a research fellow and head of the electrical laboratory. From 1987 to 1999 he was a senior research fellow and head of the Instrument Development Department. From 2000 to 2011 he was a scientific advisor and head of the Geodetic Department at the MTA Research Centre for Astronomy and Earth Sciences, Geodetic and Geophysical Institute. From 2012 to 2014 he was a scientific advisor and head of the Geodynamics Research Group. From 1 May 2014 he has been retired, holding the title of Research Professor Emeritus. From 1991 to 2000 he was an associate professor in an additional employment capacity at the Institute of Physics and Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Wood Engineering, University of West Hungary. From 2001 to 2014 he held a full professor position in an additional employment capacity. Since 2015 he has been a retired part-time lecturer. Courses taught: Electrical Engineering I–II, Electronics, Computer Architectures, Sensors and Actuators. In 2016 he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus. From 1992 to 1994 he was a visiting lecturer and research project supervisor at the Institute of Surveying and Engineering Geodesy, Vienna University of Technology, teaching courses in engineering geodetic measurement techniques and engineering geodetic computations. His research areas include global and local geodynamics, investigation of Earth tides and related phenomena, atmospheric tides, dependence of radon emission on temperature, atmospheric pressure and tides, measurement and investigation of the causes of slope movements, and monitoring of the structural health of industrial facilities — for example, in Austria: movement monitoring of the Ybbs hydroelectric power plant building, the Zillertal reservoir dam, and the Tulln Danube bridge. Instrument development: design of more than 40 instruments for research purposes, for other institutions, and for export, including: a capacitive transducer-based horizontal pendulum, conversion of photo-recording extensometers to electrical recording (in 3 countries), calibration equipment for extensometers, borehole extensometer, automatic levelling rod comparator, digital planimeter, meteorological measuring station, and others.
