Another successful doctoral defense!

Our colleague Marcell Pásztor successfully defended his doctoral dissertation with Summa Cum Laude distinction in a public defense on May 15, 2026.

His research focused on the automatic detection of infrasound signals using machine learning. To this end, he utilized data from our Piszkéstető station, which has been in operation since 2017, as well as measurements from four other stations of the Central and Eastern European Infrasound Network. He successfully identified signals from a wide range of sources, including mine explosions, thunderstorms, eruptions of Mount Etna, and human activities such as oil refineries, as well as signatures related to the war in Ukraine. Building on these results, he designed a monitoring system that has been in operation for over a year, since March 2025.

Congratulations on his achievement, and we wish him continued success in his research!
