The INTERMAGNET organization, coordinating the global network of geomagnetic observatories, has added a HUN-REN FI representative

The organization INTERMAGNET (International Real-time Magnetic Observatory Network) has a Hungarian official again after a long period. Based on a decision made last week in Rio de Janeiro, András Attila Csontos (HUN-REN EPSS Tihany Geophysical Observatory) was admitted to the organization’s OBSCOM subcommittee. His work is primarily relied upon in the modernization of the Technical Reference Manual, which contains operational standards, procedures and recommendations for geomagnetic observatories.

The global network of INTERMAGNET was founded by the geomagnetic observatories that wanted to guarantee the quality of the data required for scientific research and data exchange by establishing well-thought-out standards. Regulations have been created, among other things, regarding instrumentation, measurement procedures, data processing processes, data formats and data provision. The records of the observatories participating in the cooperation are freely accessible to the members of the organization. The INTERMAGNET was founded in 1991 by the institutes responsible for the geomagnetic observatories of some countries, including the Tihany Geophysical Observatory. Since 1995, the Széchenyi István Geophysical Observatory has also been included in the network, which currently consists of 102 operating geomagnetic observatories.
