Successful participation at EMAW 2025 conference – our institute will be the host in 2027
One of the key events for experts working on the Earth’s mantle is the EMAW (Earth Mantle Workshop). This year, the conference was held for the fifth time and hosted by the University of Vienna. A significant portion of the presented scientific results focused on the petrological, geochemical, and geophysical characteristics of the mantle. At the same time, many studies also examined the shallow and surface effects of processes occurring beneath the crust. The conference also highlighted socially important issues, such as the quantitative estimation of CO2 released and migrating to the surface during melt–rock interaction for creating more accurate climate models, and the impact of mantle processes on the distribution of critical metals in sulfide melts.
Our institute was represented at the conference by two researchers, Alessio Lavecchia and Levente Patkó. Alessio used thermo-mechanical numerical modeling to investigate the role of the globally occurring Mid-Lithosphere Discontinuity in the evolution history of cratons. Levente aimed to reveal the oxidation state of the upper mantle by studying xenoliths from the northern Pannonian Basin.
The successful conference was crowned by a major achievement: our institute will host the next EMAW conference scheduled for 2027, with Levente Patkó as the lead organizer. This opportunity will help further build our institute’s reputation in the field of deep lithosphere research.
